I’ll be the first to throw my hands up and say how hard it is to change a habit! I think we have all been there when we make a New Year’s Resolution or suddenly decide we want to lose 10kg, give up smoking or maybe you want to run a marathon.
Whatever the end vision is for you, it can be a little daunting.
You know what you would like but then there is another side of you that might not be quite sharing the vision…… maybe it’s that little Monkey again? You want to give up smoking for example but then you enjoy smoking as you feel like it helps you relax.
We do have two sides. We have an emotional and rational side and if you really want to make a change you have to appeal to both sides. When I used to teach sales, we always used to talk about the fact that clients buy emotionally and justify with logic. I suppose you could say that you need to sell to yourself what you are doing and why.
When I look at myself now and my daily habits, I think about what has changed over the last 20 years and how that happened. There are lots of tiny changes, but they add up to make a big difference in my health now. The spoonful of sugar I used to have in my coffee which has been absent for 15 years, the twice daily walks I now have with my dog which increases my steps, the reduction in consumption of crisps and chocolate and increase of fruit and vegetables in my diet. There have been many small changes (and these are to name just a few) over the years but then if you add them all together it could be quite daunting to give up and change all at once.
Another key to change is having some clarity on what your vision might be. It’s all well saying, ‘I want to be healthier’, but what does that actually mean to you and what does that look like? What does ‘being healthier’ look like for you? Is it being a certain size of clothing, feeling a certain way? Performing a particular sport and of course WHY….. why do you want to feel healthier? Why is thin important to you.
You can make changes and you will be successful, there is just a way to go about it and be kind to yourself.
